Kilchurn Castle, perched on the northeastern edge of Loch Awe, was built in the mid-15th century by Sir Colin Campbell, first Lord of Glenorchy. Originally a fortress, the castle served as a stronghold for the Campbells of Glenorchy.
Throughout the centuries, Kilchurn Castle has witnessed numerous historic events, from clan battles to Jacobite uprisings. Despite its current ruins, the castle's aura remains, telling tales of Scotland’s tumultuous history.
In the 17th century, the castle was transformed into a barracks to house troops during the turbulent Jacobite risings (Outlander connection, perhaps?). Finally, an unfortunate lightning storm in 1760 caused significant damage, rendering it uninhabitable.

How to Find the Kilchurn Castle Viewpoint on Loch Awe, Scotland
The Kilchurn Castle panorama viewpoint is a spot that you should not miss on your Scotland itinerary!
Like I mentioned above, the viewpoint can be slightly tricky to find if you don't have the right information. I went searching for it the first time without doing any research, and just assumed that the panorama viewpoint was at the castle's official car park location on Google Maps. I was wrong!
Here’s a step-by-step guide to finding this picturesque spot:
Step 1: Start your journey on the A85
Your adventure begins coming from either east or west on the A85 (the main road running across the country from Oban to Perth). Once you're close to Loch Awe, you will likely catch glimpses of the castle and the surrounding scenery.
Step 2: Turn onto the A819
Directly off of the A85 road next to Loch Awe, you'll turn onto the A819. Do not turn into the "Kilchurn Castle car park" as indicated on signage along the A85!
Instead, you'll turn onto the A819 road, drive only a short distance (approximately 0.6 miles), and find obvious parking pullouts along the left and right sides of the road.

Step 3: Follow the path to the castle panorama viewpoint
From the car parking area, you'll carry on by foot and cross over a livestock gate. Keep following the clearly worn trail leading to the castle viewpoint.
The path itself is relatively flat and suitable for all ages, but do be aware that you'll encounter livestock grazing in the fields, as well as soggy conditions after those classic rainy Scotland days. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as the terrain can be a bit boggy (and sheep poo-covered) in places.
Cross over the wooden livestock fence, and follow the trail towards the lake!
Step 4: Reach the viewpoint
Continue along the path until you reach the designated viewpoint. You've made it to the end when you hit the lake! From here, you'll be treated to an unparalleled view of Kilchurn Castle, Loch Awe, and the surrounding mountains. It's the perfect spot for photos and soaking in the serene beauty of Scotland.
Bonus: you'll likely get to enjoy views of adorable highland coos and sheep grazing in the surrounding landscape. A very quintessentially "Scottish" experience!
