10+ Best Things to Do and See in Oban
1. Dunollie Castle, Museum & Grounds
Perched on a cliff overlooking Oban Bay, this small medieval castle ruin is both beautiful to look at from down on the coastline, and also offers stunning views of the surrounding isles from up above. Don’t miss The Kettle Garden Café located on-site! Also, for a longer walk, consider strolling up to Battleship Hill afterwards (located right behind Dunollie Castle).

3. Hike Up to McCaig’s Tower
If you want stunning views of Oban and the nearby islands, take a short walk up to McCaig’s Tower. This unique circular monument, designed in the late 19th century (and rumored to be inspired by a colosseum), is the perfect spot to visit during sunrise or sunset for some seriously beautiful scenery. Click here for the Google Maps location link.
4. Stroll Along Oban Promenade
The Corran Esplanade, or Oban Promenade, is a scenic walk along the entire waterfront. You can soak in the sea breeze, watch ferries come and go, and simply enjoy the harbour. I personally love strolling the esplanade during early mornings, when the town is still asleep and the sea is incredibly serene.
5. Feast on Fresh Seafood
Oban proudly calls itself the "Seafood Capital of Scotland," and for good reason! For the most authentic experience, head over to the Oban Seafood Hut. This is arguably the best thing to do in Oban - eat delicious seafood! But that’s coming from a major foodie.
This busy little spot on the ferry pier offers the freshest catch of the day. Indulge in scallops, oysters, lobster and more while enjoying harbour views. Their hot smoked salmon sandwich is also incredible. Don't forget to bring cash!
6. Relax (or Swim) at Ganavan Sands
Just a short walk or drive from Oban's town center, Ganavan Sands is perfect for a leisurely afternoon. Relax on the sandy beach, take a dip in the sea, or enjoy a picnic with scenic views all around. This was one of my favorite sunset-watching spots while living in Oban.
7. Sea Kayaking Adventure
Explore Oban's coastline by kayak with a guided paddle excursion! See the rugged mainland coastline from a totally different perspective, with a half day beginner level trip. You'll also spot marine life like seals and otters, and get to admire breathtaking views of the nearby islands.
8. Visit the Ruins of Dunstaffnage Castle
Located just 3 miles from Oban, Dunstaffnage Castle is an impressive medieval fortress with centuries of history - it was built in the 13th century! (Having been raised in the U.S., my mind is continuously blown by how old these castles are). Spend some time exploring its ruins, the neighboring chapel ruins, walking along the property's nature trails, and enjoying more photo opportunities of the coastline.
9. Take a Boat Trip
Oban is the hub for exploring Scotland's islands. Whether you’re taking a CalMac ferry or a small private tour, the options are endless:
