A Brief History of Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle isn’t just stunning to look at - it has a long, rich history to match. Legend has it that the first fort on Eilean Donan was established by a 6th-century Irish saint, Bishop Donan.

But the castle we see today actually dates back to the 13th century. It was built as a stronghold to defend against Viking raids, sitting at the perfect spot where three lochs (Loch Duich, Loch Long, and Loch Alsh) meet.

Over the years, Eilean Donan Castle became a key spot in the dramatic history of the Scottish Highlands. It served as the seat of power for the Mackenzie and MacRae clans, who fiercely defended their lands. Thanks to its strategic location, the castle saw plenty of battles and rivalries as clans fought to claim it.

In 1719, during the Jacobite risings, British warships destroyed the castle, leaving it in ruins for nearly 200 years. Then, in the early 20th century, Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap and his family stepped in. They poured their hearts into restoring the castle, bringing it back to life and preserving its incredible history.

Today, it’s not just a historical site - it's a must-see spot on any trip through Scotland, and arguably the most photographed castle in the entire country. With good reason!

How to Get to Eilean Donan Castle

By Car

Driving to the castle gives you the most flexibility. From Inverness, it’s just under a 2 hour drive (72 miles) via the A87.

If you’re coming from the Isle of Skye, it’s about a 15-minute drive from the Skye Bridge, making it a perfect stop after (or before) exploring the island. Most Isle of Skye itineraries will include the castle for this exact reason, even though it's technically not on the isle.

By Public Transport

Buses, like those operated by Citylink, run to Dornie from Inverness, Fort William, and Kyle of Lochalsh. This is a very convenient and inexpensive option if you don't want to rent a car. Bus schedules can be found on the Citylink website.

By Tour

Many guided tours throughout the Scottish Highlands include Eilean Donan Castle as part of their itinerary! These tours usually combine a visit to the castle with other must-see locations like a loop around the Isle of Skye, making it a very stress-free and adventure-filled option.

Parking at Eilean Donan Castle

Parking at Eilean Donan is both plentiful and inexpensive. There is a large main car park just a short walk from the castle entrance, which costs £3 for 2 hours during open hours.

Parking lot fees only apply when the castle interior and visitor center are open. Outside of those times, parking is free!

On busier days, an overflow parking lot is available right beside the main parking lot. If you’re planning on taking photos, these parking areas also serve as terrific photo viewpoints (tips on that below).

Prices for 2025 range from £12 for adults to £6.50 for children, with family tickets also available.

Admission Tickets to the castle can only be purchased in person on the day of your visit. There is no online ticket system for booking ahead of time.

Eilean Donan Opening Times

The castle is open to visitors daily from February through December, typically between 10:00am and 6:00pm. Off-season hours will vary, so it’s a good idea to check their official website for updates and current open times.

The castle is closed completely during the month of January, but you can always visit the exterior of the castle for photos during any of these closed dates and times.
