The Grand Canal (on the exterior of the city) is far too busy to have a relaxing and quintessentially Venetian experience - I do not recommend booking a gondola ride that leaves from the Grand Canal (exterior). The interior Grand Canal, i.e. near the Rialto Bridge, would be more enjoyable if you have your heart set on some portion of the Grand Canal.
