Where is the Isle of Kerrera?

The Isle of Kerrera is a small island located off the west coast of Scotland, just a short distance from the town of Oban. This charming isle is part of the Inner Hebrides and stretches roughly 4 miles long and just over 1 mile wide.

When you're in the town of Oban, the Isle of Kerrera is the stretch of land that you can see right across the bay!

This tiny island is absolutely packed with charm, beautiful natural landscapes, and the most wonderful sense of peace - likely due to the lack of cars, and lack other people for that matter!

Fun fact: there are only (approximately) 40 permanent residents on the entire island.

It's a perfect and often overlooked day trip destination from the west coast of Scotland, particularly if you're already planning a visit to Oban.

How to Get There: Ferry to Kerrera from Oban

Ferry to Kerrera from Oban

Reaching the Isle of Kerrera is a mini adventure in itself. The only way to get to the island is by taking a quick ferry from right outside of Oban.

Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac), operates the ferry service, providing a fast and scenic 10-minute ride across the Sound of Kerrera. Yes, 10 whole minutes. Quite the journey! 😉

The ferry between Oban (technically “Gallanach”) and Kerrera is a passenger and bicycle ferry only. Cars are not typically allowed onto the island. The ferry runs regularly throughout the day, ensuring you have plenty of time to explore. Tickets are £1.70 for one-way, or £3.70 for round-trip.

If you're driving to the ferry slipway from Oban, it's under a 10 minute drive from the center of town, and there is free parking on site. By foot, it will take roughly 45 minutes to walk there.

Getting Around Kerrera Island

1. On Foot

One of the best ways to experience the Isle of Kerrera is on foot. The island has two main walking trail loops that guide you through its beautiful landscapes. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a casual walker, Kerrera’s walking paths offer something for everyone.

Don’t forget to bring comfortable shoes and a sense of adventure! Specific trail information can be found later in this guide.

2. On Bicycle

If you prefer to cover more ground, consider renting a bicycle. You can rent bikes from Oban Cycles before boarding the ferry. Cycling allows you to explore the island at a slightly more efficient pace, while still enjoying that fresh sea breeze and the stunning views.

Important: If you're bringing a bike on the ferry, just be sure to add your bike to the ferry booking beforehand (it's free!) .

Isle of Kerrera Walks

1. Gylen Castle Circuit

Approaching Gylen Castle

The most popular loop trial on the island is the "Gylen Castle Circuit" (also called the southern loop trail or Kerrera circular walk), which takes you from the ferry landing to Gylen Castle, the Kerrera Tea Garden, and back. Of course, there's plenty more to see along the way. You'll enjoy stunning coastal views along the entire path, and walk through rolling hills dotted with grazing sheep. Sheer and utter bliss, if you ask me.

The trail guide, shown below, will take you the long way around to the castle, and then you'll loop down towards the southern coast of the island, pass the Kerrera Tea Garden, and carry on back to the ferry slipway.

If you want to forego the full loop trail and head straight to the Kerrera Tea Garden and Gylen Castle on the shortest route possible, simply follow the trail guide in reverse. This way, you can make it an out-and-back trail instead of a long loop trail.

When in doubt, just follow the colorful teapots that line the path! Yes, real teapots. They are scattered along the path to guide you right to the Kerrera Tea Garden.

2. Hutcheson's Monument Circuit

If you’re looking for more ways to explore the island, the Hutcheson's Monument Circuit (northern loop trail) offers an awesome trek through more of the island’s hilly landscapes, but this time on the northern end. The trail takes you to Hutcheson's Monument, which honors David Hutcheson, and gives you stunning 360-degree views of islands and the sea. Perfect for explorers who love Kerrera's natural beauty and heritage.
